Bay Area Bartenders Shake Their Stuff
With Carnival around the corner and our new Caipi Mobile freshly arrived in the Bay Area, Leblon threw a very well attended cocktail competition in the East Bay last night. Eleven bartenders shook their stuff and had a great time in doing so, with Jason Crabb, of Walnut Creek Yacht Club, serving up the winning cocktail, the ‘Inspector Espinosa’ a rich and complex drink that could stand up against any cocktail in any city. Walnut Creek’s Popular Cuban-themed bar Havana, was turned into Brasil, at least for one night, with plenty of summery Leblon Punch on hand and lively samba dancing, as a crowd of 100 cheered on their favourite bartenders. Eleven bartenders from around the region, drawn from Berkley, Oakland, Dublin and Walnut Creek, competed for prizes of Leblon Cachaça and a grand prize of a ski passes and accommodation in Lake Tahoe. Most bartenders had never competed in a competition before, but in true Leblon fashion the mood was professional but lighthearted, with a wide of variety of drinks showcasing the unique ways bartenders are using Leblon in Cocktails. Much more than just a base for the Caipirinha, it’s now widely being used for rich, wintry cocktails, Asian-inspired drinks and crisp summery Punches, and all manner of twists on classic drinks too.
In the end our judges were unanimous in their top 3, with Jason narrowly edging out Justin Burdt of El Charro in Lafayette, and Todd McKean of Walnut Creek’s Sasa. Jason served up a richly flavoured drink using the flavours of North East Brazil – pineapple and allspice – and inspired by fictional Brasilian detective Inspector Espinosa, who solves mysteries in books devoted to the unique Brasilian culture.
